Still reading the book, comments to follow. But I did want to mention that in looking at your book page, I was amused at the highly apropos location for your about-the-author photo.

LOL, not many people outside of Kansas City know that's the Liberty Memorial. (My brother, the photographer, and I informally call that picture "Interrogating the male gaze".) I needed an author photo that was good and not awkward, so voila.

Couple of years ago I was visiting KC over the weekend for sports, and my hosts took me to the Memorial. It left an impression.

Have now finished the novel; enjoyed the heck out of it and stayed up too late reading it a couple of nights running. (I thank you, but my sleep debt does not, lol.) Look forward to the sequel(s).

One question: was the scene where the Selkirk-Douglas confrontation at Ryswyck gets interrupted influenced/inspired by the scene in Barrayar where Negri’s lightflyer lands at the lake? (If not, well the narrative echo works very well anyway. :) )

PS: I’ve been waiting for the full Ryswyck story since those first couple of chapters you posted on AO3 way back when. It’s very satisfying to see that beginning flower into this novel.

I hadn't been aware of the likeness till you mentioned it, but that doesn't mean there was no subliminal influence! As I recall, the interruption was there before it had a confrontation to interrupt; when I realized I could have the two plot dynamics in the same scene, it made a very satisfying jigsaw-puzzle snap. :) Thank you for the compliment of connecting it with Barrayar!

I'm very pleased with how the book turned out, and very glad you enjoyed it after all the anticipation!
